Have you been to Sheetz lately? That shit costs as much as a sit down dinner, and has for years now.

Mine must be the only family in town that wasn't impressed with SD's kielbasa. It wasn't bad, but we didn't think it lived up to the hype. I mean if it was in our neighborhood, we might get it once in a while. But we don't feel like it's worth the hassle, or the price.

I've done pretty well in the mill. I don't have to work a shitload of OT to cross the six figure mark. The Job I had before this was USW represented as well, and that was also pretty good. That RR retirement does sound pretty good. But I'm a little long in the tooth for it to benefit me anyway. Resetting the retirement clock for a new 30 year countdown doesn't make much sense when you're already over 40.

It was probably about five years ago I was talking with him. And I don't recall how long since he'd had that experience. Thanks for clearing it up.
The extended time away would be a deal breaker for me. I turned down a lot of lucrative, "on the road" work over the years. I have kids, and I can't be the kind of dad I want to be if I'm 1000 miles away all the time. Heck, the rotating shifts at the mill damn near wrecked my marriage. But you're right, if you're a person who's already working 80 hour weeks for shit money, this would definitely be a better opportunity.

I work for US Steel, and I met a guy in a training class who works at a different plant that I do, who had previously worked for the railroad, and I do believe it was NS. And he told a similar story about not getting hardly any hours, and being on call. Maybe they've changed something since then, or maybe it was a different RR, but he quit and came to the mill because he wasn't making a stable income.
To be fair, I do think that all happened while he was still probationary. But it did not sound like a pleasant job compared to working on a blast furnace.

RJ Forman is not a railroad. It is a railroad service company. They do shit like re rail cars, and remove debris from the tracks and stuff. They don't get paid like actual railroad employees, and they don't work the grueling schedules either.

No. It has nothing to do with that. The couple of parts per billion concentration that those chemicals would have been at by the time they got here would have a negligible effect on your health. As for any locally produced industrial pollution, the same wind that.carriedntyw train car pollution here is carrying that stuff away for the city. Because the winds are from the northwest. And Clairton is southeast of the city.

Also I saw one or two in Murrysville that were in your price range. But I didn't include links because I thought that might be a bit too far out from the city. But Murrysville is another nice place to raise kids.

The first article:
It's also from several years ago. My daughter is a senior right now, and my son is a sophomore. So this was before they attended the high school. I do remember hearing about it at the time though. It seems to me that they've fixed that problem.
Those school rankings don't tell the whole story either. As I said, my kids go there. I'm familiar with the academic environment. It's a large, and diverse school district. Achievement varies, but the education offered is fine.

Check out Plum Borough. Several nice houses for sale there at or below your price range. I grew up in the borough, and stilI live there. Good schools, low crime, 30 minutes from downtown in light traffic, close to the turnpike and 376, convenient to Monroeville for shopping.

This place was my favorite for a LONG time. I've been eating there since the mid 90s when it was still called King Wu. Haven't been back in a couple of years because of two or three really disappointing meals. A good friend of mine had similar problems there around the same time. Maybe I'll circle back this week.

I did too. Unfortunately, I don't remember it as being quite as bad. It always seemed to me growing up that the good people in Plum outnumbered the assholes, and that seems to have changed.. Though I suppose my perceptions could be off.

I've always wished it would be possible to do a Lord of the Rings parody starring Billy Gardell, Michael Keaton, Jeff Goldblum, and other famous Pittsburgh actors. The plot of the movie is they have to take a ring (It's one of Brady's so yinz know it's pure evil) up to the top of Mt Washington, and throw it in a storm drain. The ordeal is that they have to cross all three rivers, and go through two tunnels because there's construction everywhere.
