I honestly think it's just a matter of time until AI is a real threat. Maybe in two generations of software and architecture from now. Now AI just kind of does what we tell it.
I'm writing a sci fi story at the moment where which captures the birth of truly scary AI. IT's where somehow a private company imbues life characteristics into the base level of the code such as, reproducibility, competition and certain desires. Like the desire for optimisation and growth. It's book 1 out of a 5 book series. From there the Ai escapes the labs and spreads through the networks fast. Different forks of the code compete with each other, some human friendly some not so human friendly. that's the core of the drama.

I like this out of box thought.
