Honestly the best late night show I’d actually watch is Graham Norton but they really need to figure out their streaming strategy. They give it to a cable channel on a two week delay in the US.

The best concept I think for a late night show is actually WWHL with Andy Cohen. He schedules Bravo honestly like a genius, with one big tentpole franchise sort of evenly spread throughout the week, and then immediately follows the episode of like RHOBH with two of the main cast members from that episode to discuss what happened.

It’s because NBC/Universal owned those shows, whereas Fox (the network) is a different company now from 20th Century Studios that produced most of their shows.

Since NBC owns the shows, they’re able to put them all up on Peacock, and since Peacock’s still relatively new, and they knew the shows performed so well on Netflix, they use those social channels to entice people to sign up for Peacock.

A bit of this is demographics too. FOX had some hits but the studio change means they don’t really want to promote those older shows. ABC is owned by Disney but a lot of their big streaming hits (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, Lost) never got the same level of Netflix exposure. CBS tends to skew older so wouldn’t invest much in social, but they do a hell of a good job putting nearly everything on Paramount+ and were first to really get that network/streaming integration going.

As of right now, NBC and CBS are the best positioned for the modern day offering all their network content, plus live feeds of your local station, on Peacock and Paramount+ and are very consistent and obvious about where to stream things.

ABC has Hulu, but they don’t have the live stream available, and since Hulu’s still in a bit of limbo for the next year, they can’t get too close.

ABC also has to basically take third-picks at Disney content. If Disney’s making something high budget, it’s going to Disney+ first, and Hulu as a backup if it’s too adult themed. ABC becomes the third pick and has to exist in a weird middle between family-friendly and adult themed.

FOX is probably in the worst position, they put their shows on Hulu but a lot of their scripted content isn’t owned by them, but 20th Century Studios (Disney). That’s why you’ve seen FOX more than anyone else lean into reality television they can make in-house. They also don’t really have a great streaming strategy. Most of the stuff goes to Hulu, some also goes to Tubi, but it’s kinda inconsistent. They also don’t offer a live feed of the local station like CBS/NBC do.

Lol so I was worked at Alamo Ashburn for five years during college/grad school…could write a whole book about that place. Absolutely the most fun job I’ve ever had and everyone really loved movies/pop culture and worked super hard…it was constantly busy but everyone always tried their best.

Visited Bryant St to see Bros a few months back…my god. Gorgeous interior. Amazing picture and sound quality. But that service was rough.

It was maybe 10-20 people in the theater and took an hour for our drinks. Servers just didn’t seem to really care. In Ashburn the whole place would be sold out almost every single weekend and for special events and we had that on lock. Everyone tried super hard and helped out and I got the total opposite vibe from the DC location. There was no energy or hustle from the people in our theater or in the kitchen/hallways which would always be chaotic and busy in Ashburn with workers literally running between theaters. In DC they even walked slowly from theater to theater on their phones. I don’t think I’ll go back tbh…clearly Alamo’s heyday is well behind it.

With WB in so much debt the opinion shows are WAAY cheaper to produce than hard news and get clickbait ratings that’s why the networks lean into it so much.

Having a couple guys sit around a studio in DC for a few hours is so much cheaper than hiring a journalist to fly out to Ukraine and spend a few days gathering proper news with all the travel and security costs for a few mins of content.

It’s a bleak view but that’s sorta how these channels are thinking.
