Reply to If given the chance in your life time, will join a theoretical transhumanist hive mind? by YobaiYamete
Yes. This scenario is the only positive future I can imagine.
Otherwise different minds would compete for resources to expand themselves.
Though we can't be sure that merging consciousness is possible in our universe.
People mostly get the idea wrong. Like they would be a small part in a controversial sea of typical human consciousness. No, everyone would be this united consciousness, and the experience is unimaginable even for those, who tried heroic doses of psychedelics.

I feel you. This is the reason why I've unsubscribed from r/futurology, even though future interests me.
I also think about singularity, when I hear about long term plans of my friends etc

Reply to Are you a determinist? Why/why not? How does that impact your view of the singularity? by Kaarssteun
It's impossible to know if our universe is deterministic or not fundamentally.
Free will does not exist anyway, even if our universe is indeterministic, so we shouldn't care

We don't yet know, how consciousness exists.
It's called "Hard problem of consciousness" for a reason.
AI may be conscious or not, with the same probability, it's literally 50/50 for us at the moment

Well, imagine you are superintelligent. You can experience indescribable bliss every nanosecond. To which the best hallucinogen trips are nothing.
And you can expand this feeling even more, by using available resources.
Now imagine a second superingelligent being next to you, with the same goal.
And suppose that it is impossible for you two to merge

Basically it's life.
Like a very long VR movie.
A stream of visuals, thoughts, feelings.
A simulation that "runs" on a brain.
It's hard to define in words, and humanity knows too little about it.

If AGI is benevolent, it will help with everything.
All things that may increase intelligence, like neurointerfaces, gene editing and maybe unknown drugs, are other ways to singularity. Everything is connected. That's why the progress is exponential. Thought AI way seems the most possible to me

Just imagine how many people work on it. How they want to be the first to create AGI. And their number quickly increase.
Imagine how right now many new models are being trained on GPUs. Moore's law still works. Hardware becomes better and better.
We've already recreated many brain's algorithms (art, speech, face recognition, driving and many more). All that's left is to teach a machine how to learn by itself.
And by the way, we already can copy singer's voice, read other comments

Actually reddit is already included in datasets of some LMs like GPT-3.
But only comments with positive karma

I'm very optimistic in terms of time. I'd say we'll have AGI by 2025 max and that's basically it, singularity.
But optimistic views on AI? Not really, haha. It seems easier to create AGI, than to create it AND solve the alignment problem

Now think how many living things there are on Earth.
And how lucky you are just to be human, not some insect being eaten from the inside by parasitoid wasp's larva
Btw where did you get 0.07%? There were about 117 billion humans in total. So it makes 8/117 = ~6.83%

Nobody can truly know, what happens in the future.
As an example: it's possible, that we live in a simulation, thus creator exists, and may change parameters of this simulation.
