This happens because this stuff isn’t street furniture. The reason why things cost so much is because you need to harden it and implement it in ways that make it vandalism proof and suitable for high traffic environments.

It’s also why an ash tray on a navy war ship costs $400. Because when you’re on the high seas, you need something that’ll break into four dull pieces, not something that would shatter in a way that you’ll get glass in your eye.

I mean I guess they could just use a light aluminum ashtray, but whatever.

It shouldn’t be on the driver to decide which orders to pick to improve customer experience. They’re just being opportunists who are trying to maximize their own revenue within the rules of the platform. The app should be incorporating that into its decisions regarding order flow. I’m sure there are some cases where the drivers don’t even know where they are, they’re just following the arrow.

It’s not just a NJ thing, there’s a real disconnect in people’s minds on what the payoff of aggressive driving is. It gets you so much less further along than one might think, and at the cost of increased risk, stress, and irateness. I get it though, I find myself falling victim to it also, it takes time to remind yourself to just chill out and try to give the people you’re with a comfortable ride.
