Reply to comment by dazzlingupstairz in Interesting Globe article about how DCF avoids going through the courts when they take custody of children by dazzlingupstairz
I wasn't talking about fixing this specific case or instances like this, I was referring to the whole children & family services system. there's so many kids in harmful situations, but by taking them away from their families, wherever they end up isn't necessarily better.
I hope you could tell by the first few paragraphs I wrote that this case infuriated me and should not have happened. there are not enough checks and balances in place for sure.

oh my God. I remember coming across this story around August or so on Twitter. the mon or a close relative had taken to sharing the story of their children being taken from them by DCFS and took to Twitter after they got nowhere through normal channels. hearing how the kids were taken so quickly, without legitimate reason, WERE NOT CARED FOR in state custody, and how the welfare of the kids and the truth of the story were both pushed aside due to the mess that is our public health system was saddening and maddening.
quote from the article in Reason: "It seems everything was deliberately timed to avoid having to get a court order and avoid proving to a judge that the children were in imminent danger," Perkins later wrote"
the end of that quote links to one of the original Twitter threads. I remember following it for a month or so and not knowing what happened (I think I eventually had to stop checking for updates due to my own sanity).
also, iirc, the mom (or maybe a close friend/relative?) worked in a field that made them semi more familiar with the court system, or they knew someone that had 1st hand knowledge and could help them through. and even then it was a literal nightmare, and their kids could've been in custody for 1 year and there was nothing they could do about it. it's significantly more difficult for the majority of people who get unfairly pulled into the system, as they don't have assistance with first hand knowledge.
how do you fix it? there's so many children who are mistreated by their families who don't get on the radar. and the problems with dcfs, being in "the system", being in foster care.... I can't even get started with that.

by this I'm sure you mean to imply, we have 3 years of 1st hand accounts of what covid-19 can do to a person.
you don't know how old this person's mom is. you don't know if they have cancer. or an autoimmune condition. or live with their parents. or live with or work with an immunocompromised population. or hell, maybe they just don't want to potentially get sick for life or die?
covid doesn't care how healthy you are. it's not "just a cold or flu" for everyone. yes you should still aim to be healthy and sustain a strong immune system in general, but we know that this doesn't always prevent a terrible and potentially fatal result of a covid-19 infection. if you haven't caught it yet, you don't want to.

rent is definitely a larger portion of your paycheck here. while the CoL is obviously higher here in general, rent/housing costs have sky rocketed in the last year.
I'd try and look at the 3k range with your salary. also keep in mind - will you have a car? is that included in your price of 2,700? parking will be ~200/ month unless you just want street parking. also, when renting at most places you'll pay upfront: first, last, security, & brokers fee.

Reply to comment by Baggs83 in Dog Walker/Puppy Check-In Recommendations? by Reader8787
ditto this. honestly, if you're getting a puppy, I'd do it at a time where you can put work on the backburner for a bit. can you work from home for a week? take a few days off? if you live with a partner, maybe alternate taking days off or do 2 & 2? I know taking time off work for "just" a pet seems ridiculous to some, but puppies demand so much attention and training. best to get them comfortable with you from the start.

try Facebook groups for meeting new people in the city. there's a lot of posts in there for people looking for roommates!
search something like "makes friends boston" on Facebook, there's a bunch of groups for people in their 20s-30s who've moved to the city either just after college or as young adults for a new job
