I have enjoyed this thread, but did not realize it was going to create such a divide between those who make mashed potatoes with a mixer and those who make mashed potatoes with a masher.

Update: my father jimmied it for a bit and we're back in business. It's a Christmas miracle.

Yes. Apparently the mixer starts to wear out when you mash potatoes with it regularly for 51 years. :P
