Reply to comment by mowotlarx in Drop-In Centers Keep Runaway and Homeless Youth Awake by mowotlarx
I tried one of the adult centers while I was street homeless and they actually had a respite bed program that worked with various churches where they would send people to eat and sleep. This was pre-pandemic and they later got caught keeping client money that they were not supposed to be keeping. They had old people basically living there and they'd take most of their disability checks for feeding them and letting them sleep in a respite bed or in a chair every night.
It could be that incidents like this are why they're doing this. They probably want the kids in safer shelter situations. We had a few younger people there while I was there and it was not that safe. The men sexually harassed the women if we had to sleep in the chairs all the time. I was a fully grown adult and it was hard. I can just imagine having to deal with that as a kid.

Reply to NYC’s homeless services chief Gary Jenkins resigning as migrant crisis surges past 44K by NYY657545
Just to give you all some perspective I think there were 55K people in the shelters when I got there a few years ago. So in less than one year they have nearly had that many people AGAIN arrive from elsewhere needing shelter. The drain on the shelter system's funds is just staggering.
Plus not that I'm anti immigrant per se they're basically bumping homeless people that have been waiting for housing potentially for years to the back of the line. It took me over three years and two different shelters plus a couple more years on the street to get housing. It's not exactly the fastest process from entry to housing as it is. Double the people in less than a year and it's a going to take way longer for some of the people already in the system to get anywhere.
It's definitely been interesting watching the mayor's office go from being supportive to sounding downright grumpy...

I've already had two appts rescheduled as tele-appointments. I expect that will continue until this is over and the Covid uptick has leveled out.

Reply to Does Don Winslow introduce endless female characters just to write explicitly about their bodies and sex lives? by hammnbubbly
If this is the same guy and I think it is, Don Winslow started by writing erotica for various publishers like Blue Moon. A lot of Victorian themed bondage stuff, so it's not too surprising that even in the more legit fiction written of late the writing of female characters leans that way. The Ironwood series in particular is pretty much the same stuff only way more explicit.

Reply to comment by GeoBk in Trump protest fizzles out: "More reporters here than Trump supporters" by thepobv
Sounds good to me. Biggest block party ever is definitely warranted IMHO if he actually gets convicted and goes to jail. As a convicted felon he'd be barred from office and that would be an awesome reason to celebrate.
Democrat or Republican I don't get why anyone would think of supporting Trump now. The man is clearly mentally ill and unfit for office. Only his most diehard, fascist followers are left now.
Even if he is not convicted on this he will not land in the Oval Office again. This whole farce of a presidential campaign is just to line his pockets one more time and to puff up his ego. No way he will get the nomination. The Republicans have got to know what a disaster it would be.
They could run a donkey up against Trump and the donkey would win. Except for his diehard followers, and they are fewer by the day, everybody loathes him and thinks he's crazy. Nobody wants him near the nuclear launch codes at this point. The very thought is just alarming.
