No other creatures = danger! My goodness, man. And you call yourself a marine biologist. At least one of you lived to tell the tale!
I hope at the very least you recorded your findings, images and general location of the new discovery for future (safe) scientific study. Truly a fascinating predatory species.

Grab your kitty, lock whatever the tapper is inside your house, get in your car and book it to the nearest police station. Don’t forget your phone charger this time!

Anything is possible. Private companies would have to have a lot of money to keep everyone silent, but it is still possible

I say a military chemical test gone awry, personally. They do random little tests all over the country. Seems like they could have done one in Desmond Cove that backfired, and everyone that wasn’t afflicted was evacuated. They probably set the mine on fire as an excuse, and as a way to prevent any further exposure. The deer probably wandered into town and either breathed in the chemical, drank contaminated water, or ate contaminated plants.
I’m really sorry about Teddy. I hope you can find some closure. Maybe reach out to a PI and see if they can dig anything up about the incident, and talk to the people that live on the outskirts to see if they saw anything strange. Of course, if it is military, I suspect they covered everything up pretty well. I wish you luck on your endeavor, and hope you share it with us when you go back!
(Seriously though, this story is good enough that I would read a novel based on it. Phenomenal job, OP)

I know you want to return to her, that the mask is trying to force you to, but I urge you to fight it. Go find a Catholic church and see if a priest can do anything. Handcuff yourself to a public building and tell the police she murdered your kids. Lie and say she is a psychotic maniac if you have to. Do something, anything, but don’t go back to that house.
I’ll bet you anything she killed your wife, too.

We can’t call the police if we don’t know where you live. Hopefully it won’t come to that. My advice for you? Fire Chloe, grab your essentials, grab your kid, and book it. Don’t wait to stay there. Rent somewhere else, take a loan out if you have to, and get out of that house. Something else lives there, and I don’t think it likes roommates.

You should tell your therapist about how you are feeling in regards to dirt and germs. I would also ask her to give you more information about OCD. It’s hereditary.

You never should have told us. It’s probably too late for all of us now.

I have OCD. What is going on with them sounds like OCD. There is a specific type that deals with obsessive cleanliness. The TV wouldn’t have caused it, just become a trigger for the symptoms. OP would have gotten it from their mom. It’s genetic. I personally got mine from my grandma.
