Not just achievements.
Unlockables.
Unlockable weapons, outfits, armor, upgrades, etc. You may say you don't care, but think of all the people that grind BF/CoD in part because they want to unlock the next toy.

Devs aren't going to waste resources on coding two things and creating their own server infrastructure only to end up losing money as a result. It's also a bad idea to split the playerbase of a multiplayer game.
