I can see your point but The money that supports a publisher and staff largely comes from advertisers (as it has from the beginning of media) and brand partnerships (sponsored posts)….
Paywalls are something media outlets are doing because they all want to do the same thing. If they don’t, think think they are leaving money on the table but unless the content is very very very exclusive, readers just turn elsewhere which results in less clicks which leads to less advertisers in the long run.
All in all supporting local news is always a good thing I can see both sides but as far as local news goes, it probably does more harm than good especially when people want to read about a crime or emergency like in this case. I don’t think the wall appeared until the end in this case though

I work in digital media and have freelanced with Nj.com… that’s not how it works. Paywall fees aren’t paying for writers

Please be careful about blaming bystanders for not Doing anything…just in general. I politely asked a stranger on the path once to take their shopping bag off my shoes… I assumed they had done it by accident. And what it led to was a verbal altercation that lasted several minutes and got very hostile. They just didn’t like being told what to do. People who are aggressive and mentally ill can be unpredictable. Everyone around me disassociated while I was literally crying and shaking because this man was cussing me out because his property was on my body. So much more happened that I won’t bother listing here but the point is that bystanders just don’t want to go home to their families with a black eye because they tried to do something about it. In some few cases, Doing something can make a difference but it can be really dangerous if the person is aggressive

I didn’t know the vets took them on walks…. Also if it was post neuter wouldn’t the doggy be too wobbly and sleepy from the anesthesia to run ?
Anyways not doubting the story, just curious and glad the dog is safe. I thought I was being paranoid when I sat at the coffee shop near my vet the whole time my dog had surgery recently in case something like that happened
