Reply to ELI5: in MS-DOS there were not-interchangeable audio cards and we had to manually select it to get sound, otherwise there was none at all. When and why this stopped being a problem? by 3RBlank
Pretty much ended in windows 95 when Microsoft introduced "plug and pray". Plug and play allowed the os to set things like comm ports and irqs automatically instead of the users having to set the jumpers manually.

It's a way to easily compare vehicle efficiency. Personally, I used $/mi to compare my leaf's operational costs and the ice vehicle it replaced. I think Nissan's marketing called it eMiles at the time.

Reply to Gently tinkling harbinger of the season, or twirling, festive fire hazard? by Gutbucket1968
If left unattended it could be a fire hazard from the open flame, but other than the small candles, everything is made from metal and not a hazard.

Water cools the skin down and reduces the temperature of the burned area. Cold or hot water can cause further damage to the injured skin. Room temperature water is best since it will reduce risk of heat damage or frostbite.

You don't have to compress the results of the bomb, just the means to make the bomb.
For example, you write an instruction for the computer to calculate pi to 1 million places. You don't need to calculate pi yourself and compress the million characters. The zip file telling the computer to calculate pi is much smaller than 100 digits of pi.

Reply to ELI5: How do hotel door electronic locks know your card is valid vs. cancelled if they're not talking to the front desk all the time? by kepler1
They are communicating all the time and when changes happen. When the card is canceled at the front desk, the "cancel" notice is set from the server out to all doors. When an unknown card is swiped in a door, the door requests the key status from the server.
