Something I learned to tell myself much too young:

“I’ve survived everything in my life so far. Even the things I was certain I wouldn’t. I will continue to survive.”

Let's not sensationalize, it's not that malicious. But yes, many cities typically do a count of the homeless. New York City just did theirs in January. While I realize that pretty much nowhere is doing enough for the unhoused, this count does give the municipalities an idea of where the unhoused are congregating and how many people are in each area, which helps the city and nonprofits determine where to best use the resources they *do* have to distribute.

There are no paramilitary teams just secretly sweeping forests and encampments, forcing people out of hiding. I imagine it's more so to get a count without actually disturbing people who do not want to be bothered at a time when they are likely to be stationary and congregated so as to get the most accurate information.

So when I lived in NYC when I was 18-20, I got my first and only fake ID and it was actually quite a process. There used to be Reddit pages detailing who to contact, how to get them the money (via Bitcoin) and what states were easiest to get away with where. Pretty sure I also had to use Tor to actually order it.

I picked Pennsylvania because it was close and was relatively foolproof as they had simple ID designs compared to NY state for example, which had recently added the “window.” I assume that’s why they’ve picked Connecticut too.

Plaster, which is usually backed with lathe, literally a wall of thin wood slats that the plaster adheres to, which is why your stud finder is going crazy. What you’re hearing is plaster and lathe cracking off, which isn’t that big of a deal.

You’ll probably need to use a drill and find some screws that work well with plaster. I’d check with a hardware store, they’ll know exactly what you need.

Plaster is notoriously hard to break through. Honestly if you don’t want to deal with it, command strips are a much better option and tend to work better with plaster than on drywall even (since it can’t peel the paper off the drywall).
