A lot of people weren't happy that it won or that it was even in competition.

If you think this is the end of expression and variety, you are looking in the wrong places.

Bro what? Last year the Palme D'Or winner was Titane, probably one of the most controversial films to ever win the award.

I think Videodrome is his best work, I would argue Crash is in that same echelon. After that he kind of peters off IMO, I haven't seen Crimes of the Future yet either though so I don't know how that compares to his older stuff.

Donnie Darko is one of my favourite films ever, and I really hate the directors cut. It completely destroys the mystique by literally showing you pages of The Philosophy of Time Travel, really stupid decision IMO.

Bodies Bodies Bodies is not something I would describe as "raw and visceral" tbh, it's more of a dark comedy/satire than horror.

It's in Spanish, there is an English remake called Quarantine.

I don't really think David Lynch movies are supposed to be understood as much as they are supposed to be felt.

If you know anything about Lynch then it shouldn't be a surprise that he didn't divulge anything about his movies. He lets art speak for itself.

Lost in Translation made me want to visit Japan (which I eventually did 3 years ago) even though the film kind of focuses on being alienated in a foreign country which might have the opposite effect of what you're looking for. I just found its portrayal of the country very alluring.

Same as yours except instead of Carnival of Souls and Videodrome I put Rosemary's Baby and Scream. It was completely off the top of my head though, I think it would be impossible for me to make a genuine top 5 of all time.
