you're right, there are a few other countries that have extremely high levels of gang violence and where everybody is armed. We're in great company with el salvador, Mexico, and Brazil
oh and btw, most of the guns in those countries were bought legally here. Not only are we killing ourselves in huge numbers, we're exporting the problem

FWIW I had a great time watching the Eagles-Commies game at the Waterloo location last year, plus the space is pretty cool, in a tunnel

The next mayor needs to immediately fire the people who run Streets they are so bad at their jobs and do not care. A do nothing administration appoints leaders who do nothing

Really maddening article about the state of sidewalks. Kenney ran on a promise to improve sidewalks and yet did very little on the issue
Particularly moving is a video shot from the perspective of somebody commuting to work at Jefferson hospital via wheelchair - the woman who got paralyzed from a stray bullet at Hancock Park in Fishtown last year. Even little stuff like a hose across the sidewalk left by a construction crew can block the sidewalk for somebody in a wheelchair, and force them to go into the street to get around obstacles

The at-large members should band together and put one of their own as Council Prez, district members should not be allowed to be council presidents
Squilla and Jones would be the better options, Bass would be bad and Johnson catastrophic

PA law requires bail in all cases where the possible punishment doesn't include life without parole. PA law also does not allow minors to be sentenced to life without parole. Therefore, bail was required here, the DA could not legally make the case that bail should be denied

PA law requires that all charges that do not include life without parole as a punishment allow bail. PA law does not allow sentencing minors to life without parole. Thus, they are legally required to set a bail requirement that can be then posted

So much from the 2016 primary aged terribly. Reddit was foaming at the mouth over the TPP because /r/gaming got convinced that a trade treaty that included provisions intended to curb IP theft in Indonesia would mean that Interpol would come after people torrenting video games

I agree that it is perfectly defensible in theory. There's just an ick factor of the one candidate who makes the most out of anti-corruption pro-accountability politics having that cloud even near her

The Inky has been doing a great job with this election
I really do not like Rhynhart paying Street as a consultant.
It is perfectly defensible in theory - if you want to win an election, getting the guy who turned federal corruption investigations into an electoral asset to advise you makes sense! And anecdotally, a couple people who took Street's class at Temple said he's been touting Rhynhart as a future Philly mayor for several years
But Rhynhart positioning herself as the "good government" candidate whie paying $22K to somebody who later endorsed her, and who has a reputation for corruption, just has a stink about it

> There's hardly a plot of land available in Manayunk
Most of Manayunk is zoned for rowhomes only, with height limits. Developers would love the ability to build up on existing rowhome lots, with apartments, but cannot do that because zoning bans them from doing so. But as there is high development in the neighborhood, the developers still want to build, and thus are forced to do it on the only place it is legal to build apartments
