A lot start for helping people. After all the abuse of patients, and their relatives, it becomes a job like any other.
Some still keep that spark of wanting to help people. Same with teachers and other professions.
For the money you spend on getting the schooling, you could easily get one of the multiple easier business degrees and get a corporate job that pays a lot better...
They can still switch to an easy office job and they do, cause the hospital/retirement home/whatever want to reduce costs and time at the patients side. Meaning nurses leave, making it more stressful for those who stay.
