Interesting move, posting an anti-vermonter post in the vermont subreddit...this will not go well........

As someone who has lived in both places- the south (Louisiana for a couple of years) and here (graduated here and have been back for about 5-6 years now), I am shocked that you're disappointed with our people. I was absolutely gobsmacked NUMEROUS times by all sorts of people- from my boss to randos- by their close-mindedness and blatant, outward racism when I lived in the south. Yes, racism and prejudice exist here- Vermont is not some magical portal where every resident is open minded and nice. But I also enjoy living somewhere where religion isn't shoved down my throat at every turn. Also, education here blows the south out of the water. Not sure where in VT you reside, but I feel like most of the people I encounter are pretty nice.

I feel like back in high school (graduated about 20 years ago) Vermont definitely had this granola reputation- people thought of hippies and the gay community and thought it was all rainbows and kittens here. It's not. But I would take it over the south every.single.day.

Ummmmmm..what?!? They did not forfeit based on anyone's race; I have no idea where you correlate. Yes, it has to do with racism, but not anyone's race...there's a difference. A big one.

And for the record, and as a SBHS parent, I applaud them. According to the school, they 'can't do anything because it's not filmed at school' so these idiot kids get away with saying racist crap with no repercussion. Well, here's one!

edit: my daughter is mixed race and she showed me a video of a different girl, from SBHS, saying the n word on her instagram. She sent it to principal, but as I said, no repercussions for being a racist POS. Luckily, said girl lost friends and quieted down.

Hair: try Scherdiva Salon; owner (Robert) used to do my hair and also Miss Vermonts. They have a FB page and also booking online. Can't really speak on any of the other stylists there. He is now located in Essex.

Nails: I don't know where to go, just where NOT to.

edited: named names on the nail section and I feel bad about it.

Thanks for your insight. I really have not spent any time in southern VT in all the years I have lived here. Definitely not surprised anyone would bring up the NEK...

As for SB, I was part of a group that was put together by concerned parents/teachers called SB Educational Equity Collective (they're still around and kickin'- attending school board meetings and doing what they can) to try to figure out what could be done about the environment at the school because we all were so disappointed in how the school 'handled' various situations. So, no, they may look like they care to outsiders, but they don't really seem into putting action behind words. And it's not only racism; my daughter was being harassed by some boys in middle school and the principal told me that if it continued, he would place my daughter in a new class. Not the boys, of course. It's a toxic school district and I thought we'd be in the clear since, as you said, it's so liberal and diverse.

On another note, I also lived in the south- Louisiana- for a couple of years when my daughter was in elementary school. She never once came home from school and told me about any racism she experienced in her day. Not that you could pay me to move to the south again, but if I could do it all over, I would not have put her in this school.

The rural areas are now unaffordable as well. I also would like to live out in the sticks and have some land and get out of SB but along with the OP, anywhere within an hour commute is way out of our price range. The only 'affordable' areas I see when on Zillow is like Springfield/southern Vermont.

My bf and I have been looking to buy, and the top of my wish list would be Richmond. It has a cool artsy vibe but it's a small town. Hopefully you are coming with a good chunk of change because even moving out to the 'boonies' has priced us out.

Maybe for a small 1 bedroom or studio; the closer to Burlington, the more it will be. I live in South Burlington, and we got really lucky years ago when we started renting our very under market house that could easily go for $500 more a month than we pay, had the landlords been more experienced. That is literally the only reason I can afford to live in SB. A lovely community, but I just saw a townhouse on the market for close to $700,000. A TOWNHOUSE. No land. Not on the lake.

I don't know if you'll be looking to rent or buy, but I recommend keeping an eye out on Zillow to see what's actually out there and if that aligns with whatever salary range you're realistically expecting once here.

I love it here; it has really grown on me (not a fan of winter- and it feels endless), but now that I actually want to stay, I feel like I can't. Trying to afford housing here has gotten out of control. It used to be that if you wanted affordability, you move to the outskirts/more rural areas where you might have a commute to work. Not the case anymore! Priced out of just about everywhere within a one hour radius of my office. In a lease on a house now until June, and then no idea what will happen. So, just make sure the housing is something you can take on. Jobs don't pay that well, either.

(I am in northern Vermont- I do think it looks a little cheaper the more southern you go, like Springfield area)

Good luck!
