I just had a YKK zipper fail on my Sierra Designs bike jacket. AFTER 24 years! And I'm totally good with that. The waterproofing on the inside of the jacket wore out before the zipper.

I was in Pendleton yesterday. I thought about stopping and getting a blanket. But didn't because I can't stop driving once I start. You should fly to Boise, rent a car and drive the 4 hours to Pendleton, buy the blanket then drive back to Boise and fly back to the east coast. Only then will you feel truly attached to your blanket. But who am I to talk?

Layering is the answer. I have a LL Bean down coat with a hood that was good to -50F when I lived in Alaska. All well and good until you warm up after a trip to the mailbox. Layer! I use a Patagonia base layer, Marmot fleece jacket with hoodie and overlay those with a Northface gortex shell. Good to at least -20F if you keep moving. Patagonia is the best though. Unbeatable on any level.

I have had an Enviromate Viva steam cleaner for about ten years. It is a dry steamer which makes it much better than the wet steamers which just make a mess and don't kill germs like the Viva. I use it on hardwood floors, window glass (has attachment squeegy), countertops, inside the microwave and anywhere that needs sanitizing especially in hard to reach areas in the bathroom. No harsh chemicals needed. One of its better tricks is blowing the grit out of the bottoms of window frames. It has performed flawlessly for ten years. It is not cheap. They currently retail for a little over $900.
