That's crazy. So not only did a ton of people die, but the area was just left in complete and total destruction. Not even corpses were moved... for centuries.

It's also worth noting that Raiatea and Tahaa are in the background of that picture. They are super close to Bora Bora, so you can spend nights on both sets of islands in one trip. Air Tahiti has island hoppers and it's like a 15 minute flight between them.
