Having a family burial plot on private property opens things up to some degree.

If you own your own property, you can register a family burial plot with the town and county and bury your family at home.

I totally get that, but in addition to building more housing, stopping the rent prices hikes would help immediately. There is no reason that the apartment I used to rent 5 years ago for $600 should be $1200+ now, except that property management places can get more profit.

That will help in the future. In the present what would help is somebody stopping the ever increasing rental prices, right now.

>not building enough homes and apartments only made the homeless crisis worse.
I'm sure that's part of it but from the perspective of someone who has had unstable housing for years, lived with friends/relatives/in my car/dilapidated trailers & cabins just to have shelter, the real issue is that rent prices are fucking out of control. I simply could not afford to pay rent in most places, and definitely couldn't afford to pay rent plus save money for first/last/deposit to move elsewhere. Edit- meant to say that I technically have stable housing now because I got a small inheritance after my sister died, so I was able to buy some off grid land with a decrepit trailer on it, but it's going to take a lot of work to make it livable in winters, so I'm still shuttling around to various places. (Planning to build a cabin, but that'll take time.)
One place I rented in 2018 increased rent from $600 to $900 on the shitty apartments in the building in one year, increasing every time a tenant moved out. Last I checked, those apartments were $1200+. The building didn't magically become less shitty over the course of a few years, they badly paint the place occasionally, but everything is old, paint peeling and barely functional.
Having new places built wouldn't have helped me, because new buildings generally charge even more for rent.

Don't you mean Hannaford was Shop n Save previously?
Hannaford bought a bunch of independent grocers, including PicNPay and ShopNSave.

That's just a gross thing to say.
You're so sure you're right, you've made a bunch of assumptions and insulted me repeatedly. Try to understand that people have different ways of living their lives, and being different from you isn't being wrong.
>but please don't encourage other women to do so.
Nothing I wrote is encouraging other women to do the same. I'm talking about my life, my experiences and using my judgement in situations. I have many female friends who go through life the same way I do and they also have no problems.
I'm sorry you feel so much fear in your day to day life, but most people are good and I'm going to continue helping my fellow humans.
>And im sorry you were abused, but that won't save you either it someone wants to hurt you now.
??? Eeeww. Who said anything about the abuse I went through "saving" me in any way? I mentioned it to point out that even though I have good reason not to trust people, I still am able to recognize that most people are not a threat to me.
>I get a lot of "sassy Maine woman" vibes out of a lot of these posts
What a shitty way to put down the women of Maine.

I'm 52 years old, I've lived all over the place and have helped a lot of people. Please don't make it sound like it's never safe for women to use their best judgement about whether they should help someone in need. (Or accept help when it's needed.)
And I'm coming from the perspective of someone who was brutally abused growing up, but I still choose to believe most people are good. I'm also not an idiot, I don't endanger myself. Women are capable of taking care of themselves and don't need to go through their lives feeling like potential victims. That's some bad juju to draw to themselves.

Yeah, I have stopped to help people in a bunch of states, even as a woman alone. Most people are decent humans.
Once I stopped to pick up a hitchhiker near the narrows bridge. Big bushy beard, didn't know him, but I could tell he was super young and if it was one of my kids I would hope somebody would stop. He got to the door and we both did a cartoonish double take because he was a kid I had let live with me years before when he was kicked out of his house as a teen (he didn't have a beard then ha ha).

Mountaintop Removal Mining: Digging Into Community Health Concerns
May not be the same type of mining that could happen in Maine, but all mining can wreck the environment. In addition to wrecking the mountains, it leaves toxic pools poised to drown towns below them when they fail.
In general I wouldn't think of myself as a NIMBY either, but I moved to Maine in '91 in large part because it wasn't being turned into a mining wasteland, or being paved over with suburbs. Really hope it doesn't happen.

>45% of the population
It's really not almost half of our total population, if you take into account how few people voted (the US population is about 330 million, and only 66% of the 240 million eligible actually voted) and how many of those voted republican (chump got 74,223,975 votes).
So.... About 25% of the population actually voted republican in 2020. They're just very loud about their views. I guess there are people who are MAGAs who didn't vote, so there might be more than 25% of the population who lean that way, but I really don't think almost half the country does.
Note - I'm extremely tired so my numbers might be off, but that's the number I keep running across.

As someone else commented, the family will always have access to the plot. Of course it could make selling the property more difficult, because the buyer cannot use or develop the burial area, and they have to allow family access to the graves permanently. The burial plot can't be more than 1/4 acre, so it's probably not that big of a deal in most cases.
