Don't spam attack or you'll get frustrated. Block dodge and counter until you get the fight mechanics.
Don't ignore the side quests.
Watch out for the stuffed unicorn.

The combat is not hard, you just have to wait dodge and counter and pick your spots with certain monsters. With humans you just riposte. As others have said, it gets pretty easy once you get it.
There is a werewolf early in the game that will kill you if you don't wait for the opening and it is very hard to pass it by just attacking. After that, the combat mechanics is probably the weakest part of an excellent game.
