“Oh you were dissatisfied by the quality of X popcorn click? Didn’t you know you’re supposed to physically remove your brain before watching any movie that’s not permanently listed on Sight and Sound?”

It’s not a genre I’m interested in, so I can agree with you there.

It also is becoming more difficult to find exceptional quality films that have more inspiring messages or simply do not default to sigma cinema.

So I get your frustration.

I kind of like quirky side characters that just serve the purpose of the story. Like, idk, Grace from Ferris Bueller. I don’t know her backstory or anything else about her really outside of being the school receptionist but her presence made the film better and she sure was memorable.

I think this one is going to be a hot take but I personally believe Tom Hulce deserved the Oscar over F Murray Abraham in Amadeus.

Not that Abraham wasn’t great, but Hulce’s range for that character was incredible, and I don’t think Abraham had to dive quite as deep for his portrayal.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie vs Buffy the Vampire Slayer series is the best example I can think of regarding the topic of popcorn flicks (or series). You can be fun and even dumb as the series shows without being a complete dumpster fire like the movie is.

Strangers on a Train

pros: stylish, classic Hitchcock.

Cons: Hays code era meant a lot of the book got left out. Bruno is such a psychopath, he would definitely make a lot of top 10 villain lists if that movie were more true to the original material

Also in defense of 13 Reasons Why, I just want to say it was one of the more clever whodunnits I’ve seen. It rarely gets talked about in that sense, but it’s structured like a classic mystery, but was one of the most clever takes in a genre that is really particularly difficult to be original in.

Wow, you don’t deserve to be called a psychopath for not rooting for insufferable people doing insufferable things. That’s kind of the opposite of a psycho anyway.

I also am not a fan of the trope. I need a reason to spend 3 hours of my life with a bunch of characters, and those films never provide it. But that’s why I check out of sigma cinema in the first place.
