Duty to retreat. I feel like people are interpreting this as you can’t defend yourself until the other person is literally attacking you and by that point it’s too late, but all it is saying is that you need to exhaust all options to escape. Chased into an alley blocked off by a fence? Guy still coming after you? You have exhausted all options to flee. You can defend yourself. (Extreme example, I know, as I feel like I only see this in movies)

I just think “Stand Your Ground” opens too many doors to shooting first and asking questions later. Arguments and verbal altercations can quickly escalate into armed conflicts because of perceived threats, be they real or not. At least with duty to retreat, the threat is there. It is real. It has manifested itself physically and re-manifested itself each time the victim attempts to flee and the threat continues to be present.

Just as a little aside, I don’t think a lot of people grasp the grave impact of killing or seriously injuring another person, not just on the person they have defended themselves against, but on themselves as well. Stuff like that fucks up even seasoned police officers in instances of completely justified use of force. We have a severe mental health crisis with our armed servicemen, partially for these reasons as well. An attempted robbery, assault, etc is already traumatic enough. Do you really want to add to that? Of course if it comes down to it, you have to do what you have to do, but why not try to avoid taking a life if you don’t have to? Your mental health will be better for it.

>but first it needs to be made very clear that riding on the sidewalk endangers pedestrians and is strictly not allowed.

I use the scooters occasionally when my bike is in the shop and I’m 99% certain it literally says to not ride them on the sidewalks on the scooter itself, so there really is no excuse.

I mean I have no doubt that they would be able navigate any bad PR way better than Denise “Hon” Whiting, but still it may leave a bad taste in a lot of locals’ mouths. Perhaps they will be more hands off with locals using the branding and it won’t really change a thing.

My comment has nothing to do with legalities and what they may get the rights to do. It has to do with how quickly the public can turn on you if you try to co-opt and take control of something that is essentially a public term of endearment. Whiting successfully got the trademark to “Hon,” but it didn’t stop everyone from hating her.

Kitsch over on University Blvd by JHU is a place I recently discovered and we go there often for breakfast sandwiches. Lattes and other drinks are great too. Common Ground is still great and way more convenient being a block away from our home, but Kitsch definitely has an edge on them at least as far as their sandwiches are concerned.

Outside of those two local spots, we really liked Ovenbird.

Ivan Bates. New SA about to take over Marilyn Mosby’s job. He’s pledged to be tougher on crime but he’s also done both prosecution and defense so I’m optimistic that he understands in certain cases rehabilitation might be the more appropriate approach too. Basically his approach seems way more nuanced than Mosby’s which was basically let all low level crime slide for sake of not locking up minorities, while it also doesn’t seem like he’s gonna go gung ho lock people up for the rest of their lives for some drugs either.

I mean a scrap yard doesn’t really seem like a good fit for that area anyways. I understand they have been there for a long time, but areas and neighborhoods change. I’m sure there is property on the outer edges of the city that is probably much more suitable for a scrap yard than a couple blocks from Harbor Point.

My future wife and I met up there for a first date. It was nice. Drank some beer and ate some chicken tenders. It was the middle of winter and Fraziers is real cozy to sit in those big booths at that time of year. I didn’t really know what taking someone out on a “nice” date was at the time, but we seemed to have a good enough time that she stuck around.

Almost 9 years and 2 kids later, here we are.
