No. Having been around a lot of military bases, this rumor persists around many of them. Either with GPS, or that the base has jammers to prevent your phone or radio from working near the base. In OP’s case, it’s just tall buildings.

Overall it’s certainly trending in the direction where years like this are more common, but I recently moved back here after a long absence and this sort of thing is not unheard of. The last winter season I experienced here was 07-08, and it was quite similar to this. I remember because my job had me outside a lot that winter. The first snow wasn’t until late January, and IIRC it only snowed twice that season, and neither was very big. I also remember it getting into the low 70s the first week of January.

I think the odds for snow peak in Feb. Then still a decent chance in March. If we hit, say, the middle of March with no snow, that’s when it’s time to worry.

The USPIS part of the postal museum is fascinating.
I mainly walked out of there thinking that it’s a shame that there’s no dedicated CSI-style USPIS show where they get to say cool stuff like, “Looks like justice [puts on sunglasses] . . .has been delivered.”

I get it. I’ve occasionally gone to a bar because I don’t want to be alone, but I really have no intention of talking to anyone.

I was in a similar situation in terms of how much I could spend to live here. I'm married with kids, had to come here for about a year for work, family stayed back home, and I visit home about once a month. So the name of the game was trying to find a relatively cheap place, in a not bad neighborhood.
Anyway, my target was NoVa, because I work south of the city. So if you're interested in that at all, maybe I can help. The basic tiers I found here were:
- $800 will get you a place with roommates, in a not super desirable, but not bad, part of town.
- $1000 will get you a place with roommates in more desirable areas (say, closer to metro)
- $1200 will get you your own 1BR place in less desirable areas (think West Alexandria)
- $1600 will get you 1BR in more desirable areas, but in old buildings (this is where I landed)
- $1900 and up opens things up considerably. 1BR in places like Old Town, nicer parts of Arlington and, sometimes, DC-proper.
