Claudine (1974) with Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones. The story is about a blended black working class family who is struggling to make ends meet and it was one of the more realistic and understandable dramas I have seen in recent times.

There is a scene where Jane's Earl Jones is giving up and crying into his dinner and it's really hard to watch- really tears and sobbing. He was incredible.

The Innocents (1961)

I was expecting it to be kind of goofy but Jesus that was unsettling. Great plot, fantastic acting. Not about what it initially seemed to be about.

I later learned it was a popular movie at the time that was based on a popular book from the late 1800s.

I looked it up and it was nominated at Canne in 1962, and was nominated for a BAFTA.

I don't know why horror tends to be overlooked, and I'm sure there is a complex and historical answer.

Same. It meant absolutely nothing to me. At this point I still couldn't tell you anything that I thought was memorable in it, or what the point of it was. I also have seen it twice.
