Put yourself in his shoes and think about what it would mean for you to read it and then even have a conversation with him about it afterwards, discussing the content.
This is not even a contentious thing to consider. Read the book.

Your point 2 is my single biggest put off for any thriller or mystery story ever. It’s why the series Lost went from being brilliant to being godawful. I haven’t actually read the MR books but I won’t, because all I can remember from the first movie was a load of kids knowing something but refusing to share it, and getting irrationally angry about it.

The gulf between the latest gen Nintendo console and the latest gen other console or PC has grown exponentially wider over the last twenty years. The Switch will be the last Nintendo console that sells, because the world has now wised up to the fact that even that one (coughBOTW) Nintendo exclusive that really makes its console worth buying is so far behind the hundreds of other games outside of their ecosystem that it won’t work again.
