A well-reasoned explanation, thank you. I agree with your assessment. This film was indeed too far of a jump for Michael’s character arc from Part II. If this was Part IV, it might’ve fit better.
From a physical medium perspective, the film didn’t have the same grain and warmth as the other two. I thought that the film’s score was not on the same level either…. it didn’t capture the moods of the scenes as well as the first two.
But having said that, I did enjoy the film, just not in the way I enjoy the first two.

You and me both! I'd love to revisit these films on the big screen again.

For me it depends...
If the film was originally shot in 3D, then I enjoy them immensely. But if the film was originally shot in 2D and then processed to create a 3D version, then no... I do not enjoy them.
I was fortunate enough to go to theaters during the mini-resurgence of 3D films back in the 80's and see these films during their theatrical runs...
- Parasite
- Treasure of the Four Crowns
- Friday the 13th III in 3D
- Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn
- Jaws III in 3D
- Amityville 3D
- Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone

I do. My favorite streaming station, LuxuriaMusic plays a lot of non-English music. Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, German, French, and others that I don’t recognize. I can sometimes pick up some of the words, but the musical accompaniment and the emotion in the vocals convey the meaning.
In a way, not understanding the lyrics gives an opportunity to feel the music (if that makes any sense).
