I wonder if they did some AB testing to show that the bits of the reef they looked after did better than the rest.

This will act as a control to help answer two competing theories:

Disasters are getting more expensive

Or

There are (more/worse) weather related disasters

It's basically just saying that harmful bacteria found on hands can get into the nose if you pick it.
