Arlington gas station owners also stated their opposition self-serve because smaller stations wouldn't have room for separate full vs self pumps and the overall cost to retrofit the existing payment terminals.

I think people like the feeling of control self-serve gets them, mostly saving a little time not waiting for the attendant to walk over or the implication that you're not responsible enough to pump your own gas.

We could only be so lucky if they rebuilt Alewife. We're not that ambitious anymore.

I've talked with some firefighters about this. They've told me there aren't suitable nontoxic alternatives. You can be safe from the fire or you can be safe from your PPE but not both. This article seems to indicate the standards were set so high as to exclude the nontoxic methods.

For the firefighters more cognizant of the risks, they don't fully dress until they need the protection the suits offer (entering the building, knocking down stuff, etc). This probably varies by unit and town.

It's a sobering realization that the troopers that are leaving are not the ones people are worried about. They're the ones that have the skills to leave and apply themselves to other careers.

Lack of substantial reform that gets results is going to drain police forces of capable people and leave us with the dregs that can't make it anywhere else. I suppose after further suffering, corruption, and overall loss of trust, we'll get there but it's the long way around.

While light on details, it highlights that the damage was even worse than I had previously thought. An economy sedan has destroyed an entire store.

And of course it was all "an accident" so the driver won't be charged. Public justice will be outsourced to insurance companies to arbitrate how much damage this incompetent driver did.

As a kid, my Mom was convinced if we walked around the Expressway, we'd be murdered. She very much had a "white flight"/combat zone view of downtown so most of my knowledge came from what I could see from the Expressway. The only thing I knew of Quincy Market were the glowing neon tubes in that glass breezeway.

Now as an adult, I can project my own fears on my kids: cars are fucking awful and drivers will blindly run you over while you're trying to walk or bike to school. Of course, the difference is that I'm right.
