PATH’s $1B improvement plan, set to deliver longer trains, new cars, tap and go fare payment
Updated: Mar. 21, 2022, 7:16 a.m.|Published: Mar. 20, 2022, 4:30 p.m.
By Larry Higgs | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Before the pandemic turned commuting upside down, PATH embarked on a $1 billion improvement program in June 2019. This year, riders will start to see the results, starting with longer platforms to ease overcrowding by allowing use of longer nine-car trains..
The end of 2022 will see the arrival of the first of 72 brand new railcars and in 2023, the rest of those cars will be delivered. PATH will embark on a pilot after that to test a new tap-and-go fare system to pay by chip embedded credit or debit card or smartphone.
To get it done, PATH general manager Clarelle DeGraffe turned to Damian McShane, PATH assistant director of capital improvements, who worked with her on rebuilding the World Trade Center site before coming to the railroad.
“Today, the nine car program is alive, it is well and it is advancing. We’re looking to see limited nine-car train operation by the end of this year, by end of December,” said DeGraffe. “A lot of work had gone in to preparing for that and Damian has led the team in that effort.”

Making your water bill easier to swallow? Jersey City customers will start paying monthly in January
Published: Dec. 09, 2022, 12:57 p.m.
By Joshua Rosario | The Jersey Journal
The “long-haul” effects of COVID-19 aren’t just physical.
With the number of Jersey City water customers falling behind on their payments nearly doubling, the city’s Municipality Utilities Authority (MUA) and Veolia are transitioning residents’ water bills from quarterly to monthly billing — a move officials say will help property owners pay down their debt.
The Municipality Utilities Authority (MUA), the agency responsible for managing the city’s water and sewage systems, and Veolia, which distributes the city’s water, each posted a notice on its websites explaining the new billing cycles that will take effect in January.
“It will benefit people who may struggle to pay their quarterly bills by syncing with all the other monthly household bills and in smaller, more manageable amounts,” city spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.
A light was shone on the issue in October when Jersey City increased the tax levy in its municipal budget at the 11th hour to account for an $18 million shortfall in payments from the MUA — the result of the growing number of water customers in arrears.
Veolia officials say 3,371 accounts were past due as of Nov. 21, which represents roughly 9% of its 38,000-plus clients in Jersey City.

Reply to Can someone explain Jersey City's tax department's policies on interest accrual on property tax payments? Because I am very confused at what just happened. by [deleted]
Just fyi I am pretty sure after the 10 day grace period you will be locked out of paying by credit card online. You will have to go to the tax department in person and pay
with cash or a bank check.
You will also be put on the naughty list (tax lien) list that gets published in the local
newspapers every 2 weeks. They only do that for 4th quarter late payments.
Happen to me a few times because I just forgot to pay the 4th quarter bill. Even after you pay your name is still published they don’t clean up the list for publishing.
Being on that list is no fun neighbors start rumors that you are losing your house … “is everything all right the Anderson’s? I heard they are losing their house”. Also investment sharks start calling your house.

How the Grinch tried to steal one Jersey City street’s Christmas spirit
Updated: Nov. 18, 2022, 3:53 p.m.|Published: Nov. 18, 2022, 3:51 p.m.
By Ron Zeitlinger | The Jersey Journal
“Then he growled, with his Grinch fingers nervously drumming, ‘I must find some way to keep Christmas from coming!’” — Dr. Seuss, How The Grinch Stole Christmas
The Christmas villain did not pay a visit to New York Avenue in Jersey City this week, but someone — perhaps also with a heart two sizes too small — did their best impression.
A homeowner whose Christmas display is an annual winner in a countywide contest says his labor of love was vandalized by someone who snipped the wiring on multiple strands of expensive LED lights outside his home.
Edward Roman said it takes a good month for he and his husband to erect the elaborate display at 413-415 New York Ave., and he was stunned when they found the damage Thursday morning.
“We go bigger every year,” said Roman. “We do it for the neighborhood, for the kids. ... It’s disheartening to see this happen because it makes you not want to continue doing it.”
The couple started creating the display on Nov. 1, and it’s still incomplete, Roman said. Now he has to practically start over.
The dazzling display is a perennial champion in the Hudson Media Group’s Best Christmas Decorated Home Contest that covers Jersey City, North Bergen and Bayonne.
Roman said at least three strands of the lighting were damaged. “They are $50 to $75 each. I have to un-connect everything to see how much damage was done. There may be more strands cut that I don’t even know about.”

Sorry looks like they just made the nj.com piece a “Subscriber Exclusive”. You would think they would have left it open for everyone on Election Day.
WHEN ARE POLLS OPEN?
Polls across New Jersey are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. As long as you are in line by 8 p.m., you are allowed to vote.
The same goes for if you’re dropping off a vote-by-mail ballot in a dropbox. The dropboxes are locked at 8 p.m., but if there’s a line at that time you’ll be able to drop your ballot in the box.

I want to leave, but I'm afraid he might have a knife in his right pocket, so I'm just waiting for him to stop touching me so I can leave. But he starts getting angry at me for "wasting his time" and not giving him the $20. Then he says
"I won't hurt you if you give me $20",”
Sounds like you were assaulted and threatened with bodily harm…..an attempted robbery. Did you report it to mall management/security with a description of the bum, so it doesn’t happen to someone else?

Timothy Herrick would have us believe that “Christopher Columbus Drive is the Jersey City equivalent of Confederate statues – and as horrifying.” Mr. Herrick weaves an incoherent tapestry of pseudo-history that manages to sew Columbus’s “first encounter” to the experiences that colonialists had with the Native Americans in what would become Jersey City.
