It's natural for people to try to let you know how they "understand" what you're experiencing. It's nearly always a bad idea. Frankly, it's not great listening skills at the very least. At worst, it's just terrible. If you're aware of something going on with someone, just be a shoulder if you can. Don't offer an example of your experience.
