He's got the kind of writing that can be so smooth.
I also got a kick when Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 was introduced in that one episode of iZombie, he was introduced as "the one, the only Rob Thomas".

As did the recently deceased David Warner, who voiced Herbert Landon. Started off as a one-off villain and then became a recurring character. King move.

Agreed. I always enjoyed his interactions with Jameson, or "Picklepuss" as he called him. JK Simmons is of course the GOAT, but Ed Asner did the character justice.

Not sure if it counts as a pilot per se, but the first episode of Fargo is awesome. Not just for what happens (a lot) but for how glorious and seamless the transformations of Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman are into their characters.

Hmmm. Maybe Carlo Rota? Best known probably as Yakavetta from The Boondocks Saints, he also appeared on an episode of Breaking Bad, as a chemist in Mexico who Jesse teaches how to cook his way.
But he was great as Morris O’Brian, Chloe’s ex-husband on 24. He was also delightfully sleazy in his brief role as the prison warden on Dark Matter.

Those that I’ve rewatched, yes. The Batman animated series and Spider-Man animated series from the mid 90s both still hold up IMO.
The Spider-Man series in particular was outstanding at introducing me to so many other Marvel characters. The voice acting is also great and contains more recognizable names than I ever would have guessed.
