All you have to do is cancel your reg on the DMV website. You don't need to send plates back, you can destroy them and throw in garbage. You can also cancel your insurance BEFORE without any fines/fees like someone mentioned as long as the vehicle isn't leased or financed, and even then you still most likely would not be charged anything.

I don't worry about things that are out of my or anyone else's control.

Just because the home is "worth" millions of dollars does not mean the homeowner/s are wealthy. They could have been in those homes for decades when they were worth a "normal" amount, and because of the market now, they shot up in value. And even if they are wealthy, why does that disqualify them from something their taxes paid into?
