If you got the gear, or a vehicle you can stay at national parks pretty cheap. You are only allowed to stay for 10 days, then you have to vacate for 3 days. I nearly did this after the union i am with went on strike and i ended up loosing my apartment.

Far from light pollution and a big open parking lot. Not sure how far that is for you, but its a idea.
