A friend of mine is a gemologist. When you sell it back to a jewelry store, they usually pay you scrap price for the diamond. They look up the value in a book with a table based on the 4 Cs - Color, Cut, Clarity, Carat.
They then pull it out of the setting, clean it up, and sell it at the retail price. That’s why most jewelry stores give you similar pricing.
