It is interesting for me because most of my friends who grew up in more rural parts of NJ tend to fall in this camp where it is more of a Northeast type pride. While many of my friends who live in parts of the state close to NYC are very prideful of being NJ.

Definitely look at the more rural counties in the state. Salem, Sussex, parts of Warren and Cumberland. Your options will be more limited compared to more populated parts of the state but certainly cheaper. I have seen some one bedrooms in Newton for $1,300.
Maybe even central jersey? I am not from there but I would imagine during the off season that is not the summer, rent prices would be pretty cheap.
