If you have a chance to watch What's Eating Gilbert Grape, that might change your mind. He was 18 years old at the time of filming and he gave one of the most convincing portrayals of an individual with an intellectual disability that I've ever seen. That is, in my opinion, the best example of how convincing his acting could truly be and is vastly different than anything you've seen him in within the last 20 years.
