I think there are like 6 or 7 Maiden records you can justify putting above the debut

Disagree with MGMT, I’d still say Little Dark Age and Congratulations are well above it. The debut has great hits but it’s not their most consistent or ambitious

Sly 5. Technically it doesnt count because there wasnt an announcement, but the series ended on a cliffhanger with Sly 4 that never got resolved.
Sly Cooper was my whole childhood, man. Every passing year since 2016, I’ve lost hope a sequel is gonna come out at all. Especially considering how every Sly-related project has just been swept under the rug since then. But damn do I miss that series.

Well with the Daft Punk record, they’d only released like 3 albums total before Random Access Memories. But even then, Damon had been releasing albums with Blur way before all those other bands. It’s important to keep in mind just how many projects he’s came out with. Also he’s the sole musical contributor to Gorillaz, while all those other bands have multiple members, too. I think cases like BJM are pretty rare cases tbh.

I think most artists DON’T tend to get better after 20+ years, or at least after they’ve hit their creative heyday. Damon’s had skin in the game since the 90s, and most of the best 2000s bands I can think of just don’t even hold a candle to their old stuff. Seems like a pretty natural progression of artistry tbh.
Also what about Song Machine? That was pretty fire.

Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West (maybe), Tyler the Creator, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, etc. are all iconic, great artists that seem to have that status right now. But I think with the way music is consumed and just how many scenes there are, it’s hard to say definitively without looking back. I could see people like Weyes Blood, Black Midi, or King Gizzard getting that status but I can’t say for certain.
Edit: literally why the fuck did I get downvoted for this LMAO
