There's a reason why a character reading The Bell Jar on TV is visual shorthand for "I am seriously depressed"

Reply to comment by [deleted] in TIL about the sinking of the S.S. Eastland, a small steamer who, in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster, was filled with so many lifeboats that it became unstable and eventually sank, leading to the deaths of 844 people. by Sebastianlim
The ship capsized so that would have rendered half the lifeboats unusable and the remaining half much harder to launch. Apparently most the victims were trapped below deck and drowned.

Reply to TIL about Eurypterids, or "sea scorpions", the largest known arthropods ever to have lived. The largest, Jaekelopterus, reached 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) in length. Many forms lived in brackish or fresh water, and their dual respiratory system allowed for short periods of time on land. by WouldbeWanderer
8 feet? I'm fucking glad they're extinct

There was a cat who survived... and was killed afterwards so her brain could be dissected.

I was obsessed with the Titanic when I was little. Then the movie came out and I hated it. So much human drama, so many genuinely compelling stories and it focused on some made up, cliche, boring romance.

Some of her poems feel like they could be extra lyrics for White Rabbit. She was already a very troubled woman, long before that asshole Ted Hughes got to her.
