"AI safety," at the present, is just stupid political correctness that annoys half of the country.
Real AI safety (the AI alignment problem) is a serious existential problem that requires a ton of attention and research.

They wouldn't land on planets. Self replicating probes would land on asteroids and comets, mine them, and reconfigure them into space colonies, communications lasers, and into more self replicating probes.

And if a machine develops superintelligence, and it's goals conflict with humanity, goodbye humanity.
Hence the importance of alignment.
