Finally, a judge with a brain.

Note that in the article, the would-be killer has “a long criminal record.”

The only reason he could possibly have a long criminal record, is because the impotent system kept letting him go. Which caused two people to be nearly killed. One of them still might die, according to the article.

This has to stop.

It’s one thing to have housing that’s “reserved for extremely low income residents,” but how will the residents pay for their housing?

Unless you’re proposing that you and I should cover the cost, or government should force the property owner to rent it out at a loss?

In any event, should there be a time limit on “transitional housing?” If so, what would the time limit be?

A: They should get themselves into housing. You’re also welcome to open up some space for them at your house if you want.

B: It wouldn’t be such an unsafe situation if we’d keep violent criminals locked up. Everyone, homeless or otherwise, deserves to be able to walk down the street without getting stabbed.

I agree with you for the most part. Police often can't even be bothered to come out for noise or parking complaints. But I can hardly imagine a situation where the police wouldn't respond to a domestic violence/threat of domestic violence complaint.

And yes, once they're there, how they respond to it does involve a lot of discretion. I'll agree with that. But the man with the knife had just as much discretion as the officers did, and seemingly chose not to use it. I know that neither you nor I were there, but from the article, the officers even tried using the taser first, and the suspect still chose to be shot rather than to put the knife down and be arrested.

Why are you making assumptions about the guy's mental health? Isn't it possible that he was just an asshole? Or stupid? Or both?

Also, if I may ask a personal question, how did you celebrate New Year's Day yesterday? Did you engage in any activity that caused the people around you to call the police? Did you threaten anyone with a knife? Somehow my guess is no to both. That's one of the reasons you woke up alive today.

I agree that the reporting is lackluster, but there probably isn't anything else to report until the incident is further investigated.

But how can you assume that the police work is "terrible" without good reporting? If you automatically assume that every time a suspect or perpetrator dies, it's the police's fault, that shows a lot of bias on your part.

Redditors will think I’m quirky and weird, but just for the heck of it, I spent my entire New Year’s Day with every knife I own put away. And then none of the people I live with called the police. I also didn’t brandish any of my knives around police officers.

And then, guess what happened? Here I am this morning, alive and not shot by the police. Weather seems nice today too.

That guy in Gilford sure had a strange way of celebrating the holidays.

They also pushed for the bail “reform” that lets NH criminals loose ten minutes after they’ve committed a crime, so they can go out and commit more crimes until the lazy courts get around to someday giving the criminal a suspended sentence or maybe some probation.
