There’s nothing to suggest this is about maturity. There is everything to suggest these are calculated decisions to hold onto power and protect the image that fuels that power at any cost.

All economic downturn short of societal collapse can be turned to billionaires’ benefit. Do not forget that a significant subsection of their donors either are or are aligned with literal enemies of the state a la Russia and China, among others.

Have you considered the possibility that that moment of happiness before you die is based entirely on your believing this is the only way to experience happiness? From the way you described it, it sounds like you eventually convince him to kill you in order to bring this to pass. The emphasis on this end as being your goal will create a fatal lust for result. I wouldn’t be surprised if you became desperate for it if you make it a focus of your life as you are.

More likely, because he met his contact in the vague vicinity of that facility, they will allege he did so for the sake of data collection. Nice false parallel narrative to all the Russians detained for surveilling sensitive locations across Europe recently.
