The first time I heard The Cure's Lovesong in the back of my dad's car at 9 years old on Austin college radio, it has been stuck in my head. A few years later, the moment I had the resources and agency to buy music I went to the Sam Goody to pick up Disintegration but they didn't have it. They did have Live In Paris though, which had Lovesong so I bought that. It wasn't long before I had all of The Cure's releases, including the UK imports.

Right.
Well that's what the OP is asking for. Songs that seem happy on the surface but are actually depressing.

The lyrics, yes. It's certainly up for interpretation but these lyrics stand out to me:
>Oh just burn down the house!
>
>Burn down the street!
>
>Turn everything red and the dream is complete
>
>With the sound of your world
>
>Going up in the fire
>
>It's a perfect day to throw back your head
>
>And kiss it all goodbye!
The way I interpret the lyrics is someone trying to convince someone to just forget about their troubles and be happy. But the subject of the song says it's too late for all of that and, instead, they're going to take the route described above. "Turn everything red and the dream is complete".

There's a market for that now and it's rapidly shrinking. Once it's gone, it's gone. Our parents are the last generation that won't understand this stuff, I think.

I watched this the other night and yeah- it's very sleazy and exploitative. Really gross and unprofessional.

Blue Bell Knoll by Cocteau Twins. Lilting and shimmery for most of the song until the middle/end where it gets huge.
(I'm mostly kidding but also not.)

If you don't think musicians today play instruments or have talent you're just not listening to the right music.

In Siouxsie and The Banshees' "Spellbound" the lyric is "Following the footsteps of a rag doll dance we are entranced."
I always heard "Following the footsteps of a red stoned donkey artichoke."
In text that doesn't make a lot of sense. But the way Siouxsie pronounces "dance" and "entranced" sound like "donce" and "entronced".
