The fact that motorcycles appeal to thrill seekers and risk takers and people who like to Hot rod and show off, exactly the worst kind of people to be driving the least safe and highest mortality rate form of road legal automobile.

It’s unfortunate that motorcycles tend to have a stronger appeal to exactly the kind of motorist who should least be driving them.
(I’m speaking in generalities, of course I know many motorcyclists have no desire to hot rod and are super chill and responsible)

Isn’t the article specifically talking about abandoned properties, not properties with current occupants?
Edit: nvm, I didn’t get to the rental housing section near the end. I see what you mean.

I have read very convincing studies that show turning derelict properties into housing for the homeless or very low income housing is not great.
These old houses often have a lot of issue that people who aren’t accustomed to maintaining a home or who have access to quite limited resources, just can’t address. These houses just continue to deteriorate into squalor but now with a person in them.
I think in many cases it is cheaper and overall better to knock down the run down house and build a couple of new cottagettes or mini homes on the lot to then use for these purposes.

Reply to Does this area have as much crime as people say ..? People keep telling me this is crackhead central. by shdwfknbnd
The petty theft and property crime rate is very frustratingly high. There are many parts of town where anything not chained down or locked up is going bye-bye. Catalytic converter theft, copper theft, car window smash and grabs, that kind of shit. It happens a lot.
But the city isn’t dangerous to your person. Like you aren’t at great risk of getting mugged or jumped. Not that it never happens of course, but it’s not bad. There aren’t really any neighborhoods where you get that “I need to keep my head on a swivel and be out of here by dark” tingle down your spine, the “I am not safe here” feeling.
So if you’re a bicycle or a catalytic converter, You’re fucked. If you’re human, you’re pretty safe.

Would it be useful to have more of a "Where should I NOT get my hair cut as a trans man?" kind of post?
I would hope (might be very wrong) that there is a decent expectation if you walk into most places in town, especially the chains, that they wouldn't bat an eye. But are there any actually trans hostile places?
I say this as a Cis man who would then for sure NOT patronize those places.

All the urbex your heart desires: Cairo Illinois. It’s a half day drive, so you’ll probably want to and stay overnight to get a full day. Send me a DM and I can also direct you to a dozen local wild caves on public land.

Why? A city had hundreds of miles of road, thousands possibly, if you only every did one "significant" road at a time you'd never keep up with the maintenance and improvements needs. You have to have multiple ongoing projects at once.

All of those c-street places are really good. Cafe Cusco is the only place in town that will make you a pisco sour (that I know of). Which is one of my favorite drinks.

Also I agree whole heartedly about asset forfeiture. I very rarely hear of cases of imminent domain where it seems clear to me there wasn't' a genuine public interest and I am left feeling like the process was abused. Not never mind you, just not often that I can think of.

So is the sentiment here "it sucks but it's necessary" or "it sucks and should not exist"?
Cause I might be willing to agree with the former, but not the latter.
There are a hell of a lot of things that are terrible but it's good it can be done when needed.

I sometimes feel like I'm the only person living in Springfield who thinks the traffic and roads are fine and pretty typical of cities this size, and rarely experiences issues with either drivers or the road network.
I know it's not true that I'm the only one, just people that are fine with things don't go online and make posts about how fine and un-noteworthy it is. The people that go make posts are the ones who want to complain.

But man, almost every time I see these Traffic/Drivers suck posts, I'm like "do we live in the same city? What are you talking about?"

Like MAYBE on a heavy shopping weekend or when there is some major event, traffic gets genuinely congested and backed up and bad, pretty much any other time....it's fine. There's maybe a 30 minute window right during rush hour that gets backed up a little, but even that isn't usually that bad.

I think I need to clarify. I was not saying these things ABOUT PROFESSIONAL SPORTS, I was saying them about spending taxpayer money on stadiums is these things. I will elaborate:
1- It's useless in the sense that these teams are profitable enough to upgrade and improve or even build their own stadiums. The only reason taxpayers feel compelled to pay for these things is that teams threaten to leave and go to a town that will, if all towns just said "no, we wont" then the industry would pay for it themselves, or just play in less grandiose stadiums, which is a perfectly viable option.
2- Again, establishing a sports teams, fine, it's good for a town to have a home team, sure, but spending big tax bucks to convince them not to leave? Especially when they COULD afford to do these things themselves? Crap. It literally brings in nothing, just spends a big ole fat wad of cash to convince them not to go.
3- I submit to you that no business in the vicinity of the stadium will see any meaningful change to their business once this money is spent and the remodels are done. I submit it is very unlikely this spending will cause any new nearby business to open that otherwise would not have. I also submit that none of the businesses in the, say, mile radius of the Stadium, that currently exist and are successful, would not exist or would not have been successful if that stadium had stayed a fairly modest municipal stadium in perpetuity. Now of course I can't "prove" that, but I can point to the existence of several studies showing that after large multi-million dollar tax payer funded renovations of stadiums, local businesses see negligible to non-existent change to their business.

So again, just to be clear, I am not poo-pooing the idea of having a home town sports team. What I am suggesting is that the taxpayers being held sort of pseudo hostage by these teams for large expensive remodels which they can afford but obviously would rather us pay for, is crappy, and that spending has utterly no benefit to any of us, other than placating the blackmailer for the privilege of their continued company.
Jimithyashford t1_j6uyoq2 wrote
Professional team sports stadiums one of the few ways to spend tax money that is:
1- objectively useless
2- brings absolutely nothing to a city
3- does not create jobs or drive business
4- is a blatant hand out to the already wealthy
And yet somehow
5- you absolutely must do or your citizens will loathe you and vote you out of office

It’s usually quick and easy, cause usually not too crowded and it’s a very small airport. I usually only show up an hour in advance instead of the normal 2 at larger airports.
Small planes though, so if the air is rough you’ll be bounced around pretty good climbing to altitude.
