Yeah it's the getting to Fort Lee that is hard, but I've spent a lot of time refining my route. I focus on quieter one way streets so definitely not Central . It's actually a delightful route! Not a detailed screenshot, but gives you the idea. https://imgur.com/iw6AVpC.jpg

I commuted by bike over the GW into NYC from JC for a few years until the pandemic, and there's a much more sedate, bike friendly, and picturesque route north if you stay up on the cliff. I tried river road a handful of times years ago and then went looking for alternatives. Anyway, just a suggestion if you are feeling like getting back out on the road at all.

If you ride defensively and are comfortanle on a bike, it's pretty safe. Though I guess compared to what? They've added a ton of bike lanes lately. I don't think anyone is really policing where you lock up. I recently tried the Oonnee Pod at Journal Square and recommend it if that's one of the places you plan to lock up.

Yes, oddly I have also taken it that direction once, and I must have been absorbed in reading or something and didn't notice if we stopped inside JSQ or went past it on JFK.

I'm not interested in skipping out on zones, just wondering what the experience is like if you are taking the 119 through JSQ. Can you just stay in your seat on the bus? Sometimes I just prefer a one seat ride even if it takes longer.

I wonder if that's an angle thing. I've definitely seen reflections like that from license plates before. But yeah, toll evaders are scum.

As long as we are doing dumb questions: I live close to JFK south of JSQ and sometimes take the 10 or 119 to JSQ to catch the Path. But I have never tried to take the 119 all the way to Port Authority. What happens at JSQ if you are on the 119 from, say Communipaw? Do you just stay in your seat? Do you have to get off? Also how many zones is it from south of Communipaw to Port Authority?

Lots of moaning about "corruption" in these threads about the BOE, but nobody seems to ever be able to point to examples of the kind of large scale corruption that is supposedly behind this increase in our taxes.

Adding another FREE method that is not 100% walking. The walk portion is shorter than over the GW, but you can walk over the Bayonne bridge and proceed to the Staten Island Ferry which is free. If you were itching for steps, you can lap the boat. It's pretty big.

My immediate reaction to this post is: Are you kidding me? You bought a car without thinking about and researching where you would put it? But there are lots of questions about parking in this sub, often from people who are considering getting a car for the first time, and it's easy for me to forget that if you come from somewhere where parking isn't a concern or just haven't used a car much, this isn't something top of mind. For posterity, can you share what your reasons were for buying a car?

Yeah, these things occupy different tiers in our hierarchy of needs. But dynamic pricing is one thing. The fees go down when there's slack demand. Here the allegation is that the providers are setting minimums in a roundabout way. It would be like if the golf courses in the area all agreed to never charge less than $200.

For anyone wondering, the tragedy referenced here is the death of two JC police officers. From the Wikipedia entry:
On December 25, 2005, two Jersey City police officers died while on duty after their rescue vehicle plunged into the river from the bridge. Shawn Carson and Robert Nguyen were summoned by colleagues to bring additional flares to the western approach to the bridge to better regulate traffic. Extreme weather conditions had caused poor visibility, and the gate that normally lowers when the bridge is in the open position had been malfunctioning for some time. The officers drove across the bridge and delivered the flares. They did not know that the lift span had then been raised, and as they were making their return trip, their vehicle went over the edge of the open bridge. While the body of Carsen was recovered approximately 90 minutes after the accident, that of Nguyen was not found until December 29. After an investigation the bridgetenders were cleared of any wrongdoing in January 2006. According to the NJDOT, the barrier was experiencing continuous problems due to an earlier accident, and the agency was waiting for replacement equipment to do repairs. Unsatisfied with the agency's findings, the Jersey City Police found that the NJDOT, knowing that there were problems, should not have relied on local police for public safety. A new barrier gate was eventually installed in June 2006. On May 9, 2007, the New Jersey Legislature adopted a joint resolution designating the crossing the "Shawn Carson and Robert Nguyen Memorial Bridge".
If you cross this bridge on the sidewalk or drive slowly, you will see the sign honoring them. https://imgur.com/o3ypwkD.jpg
