Those are zinc carbon. Sucky energy density but no caustic leak- perfect for packaging as a starter kit when there is no telling how long it will sit on the shelf before being sold. Goes flat in a minute? Well, you think, starter batteries always blow, but it worked. I'll now feed it alkalines bought separately- and from there, son, you're on your owwwwwn.

>Most good batteries today should not leak.

Yes, yes they do.

Because we're trying to make a plane, not a train.

Yes, but cruising speed is also very far from anything to crash into.
At a closing speed of 1,000 mph, a head on collision wouldn't leave much on the recorder anyway- you wouldn't have time to speak between perceiving the oncoming and impact.
Plane just disintegrates? Engines gone so thrust lost, what's left falls by gravity against wind resistance, so what is terminal velocity for a powerless fuselage?
Otherwise, most crashes will be at lower speeds, as the pilot tries to soften the impact with whatever slow-down ability is left.

As all things should be.

Lol. I just had to replace an outlet in a condo that was built in the 70s, where the outlet started near burning as described. It was a center of the stream one so it had both line and load wires.
Whoever installed it had a mixed philosophy. Both whites and the load black were stabbied, the line black was hooked.
Guess which one failed!
