They did not know Earth orbited the Sun, thinking it was the other way around. They could determine the pattern of the seasons, with very simple signs. Thousands of years ago people could do that. They even built things to take advantage of these patterns. Newgrange in Ireland is a megalithic tomb that has a small gap above the entrance that allows the Sun to shine right through and light up inside it on only the 21st of December, the shortest day of the year. There are many other examples.

Wrong. On New Year's Day there may be still people in the year before yours and on New Year's Eve there may be people in the year after yours. So that is two days in the year that it happens.

Reply to ELI5: Why does American football is named "football" and football is named "soccer" in America ? by RedAskWhy
In Ireland, one of our national sports is Gaelic Football. People often refer to it as "football" and use the word "soccer" for that sport. So it is not just in the USA. There are many sports referred to as "football" around the world. Soccer and rugby are big in Ireland, so we have several popular forms of football.

I can see various things there. I can see it as a bird with the large wing on this side and one barely visible on the other, and a large head. I can also see it as a bird showing two large wings and a small head.

Reply to When should Christmas music start playing? by [deleted]
The absolute earliest is the 1st of December, but probably not for another week after that, the 8th being a very appropriate date, given the feast day it is. It should finish on the 6th of January. Funnily enough, the time of year that you are least likely to hear Christmas music is during Christmas. For weeks before Christmas you hear Christmas music, including lots of versions of "The 12 Days of Christmas" and then it all stops a couple of days into it. The earliest you should ask someone "How was your Christmas?" is on the 7th of January. It is obviously too early before that.

Reply to Eli5: How is it possible for someone to speak English, but not be able to read or write it ? by Aboutfun
Easily. They are different skills. Babies learn to speak long before they can read or write, so if they never went to school, they could speak, but not read or write.

I could name them all, but there is no point, seeing as they already have names.

Simple things like lengths of shadows. The same kinds of simple things that we can do now.
