Not only in there. There were.also in German and Turkish TV and very successful.

We will have to disagree there. Untill the Dominion and later Worfs arrival it was pretty forgettable. It's hard to beat Babylon 5 build up and conclusion. I am not a fan of the final season but the reason were out of JMS control.
But it simply comes down to the fact that I never warmed up to DS9.

No, that wasn't the real reason. But that happens when you stop watching when it gets interesting.
I have seen both DS9 and Babylon 5. B5 is better.

I believe the director of the pilot usually sets the style for the series.
Also How I Met you mother is the rare show, where almost all episode are directed by the same person, Pamela Fryman.
