Two years ago I just started my first job out of grad school, making the jump into the unknown and hoping to get out of a bad situation that caused me a lot of grief and anxiety (Don't try for a PhD folks, you don't need it). A couple weeks ago I celebrated my two year anniversary with my company with a promotion. I love what I do, I love the people I work with, I love the flexibility that comes with my job, and I've learned way more during my time here than I did in grad school.
Over the last two years I've saved up to buy a home and have developed a long-term plan for what I want my life to look like. In two years' time I will have purchased my first home and will be on my way to building a portfolio of investment property. If I hadn't made that jump, I'd still be spinning my wheels in grad school.
A great Formula 1 team principal once said: If you've got a problem with you car, change your fucking car.
What does that mean? You have agency over your own life. Where you can be in two years is a direct result of the decisions you make now. So go get it. You're floating through space on a rock until you die. Do you really have anything better to do?
