There was a TIFU post of a guy who one had three cat faces as his driver license signature.
And then he had to take out a mortgage and the bank made him sign a whole ream of paperwork to put in an official signature change.

One of the proctors leaked all the answers for the tasting portion of the 2018 exam (widely reputed as the hardest--by a vast margin--portion of the 3-part Master Sommelier exam) to two people.
And because the group of test-takers each year is so small and they are all in constant contact each other for study and practice, it was impossible to know how many people got the leak.
And so they just blanket disqualified everyone and made them all retake the test next year.

He was the guy that announced that Japan is leaving the League of Nations (after being condemned for conquering Chinese Manchuria) in an incendiary speech.
Also:
> Following his return to Japan, Matsuoka announced his resignation from the Rikken Seiyūkai and his intent to form his own political party modeled after the National Fascist Party in Italy.

I would like to see the same show, except it's about Sommeliers instead.
That would be so much more pretentious that it might just wrap around to being interesting again.

The novel was written because Katherine Patterson's 8-year-old son's best friend was struck by lightening and died. And the book served as therapy by proxy for both of them.
David Patterson later wrote the screenplay of the film, I can't even begin to imagine how you would feel about that when you are revisiting that.

Yes, they are Potemkin parties that are allowed to exist purely for show. None of them have ever voted against the ruling Workers' Party of Korea in all their history. (and every once in a while, they'd kill a few of these minor party members just to make sure no one gets too comfortable).
The articles for these parties literally refer to them being "awarded" their seats in the Congress.

Reply to TIL about "The Pearl": An underground pornographic magazine issued monthly between 1879 and 1880. Its contents were three serial erotic tales simultaneously, devoted to sex in high society, incest, and flagellation. It was shut down by the British authorities for violating standards of obscenity. by DasherPack
> The topics depicted in the novels and poems were wide-ranging, including women's suffrage, physical disability, sexual impairment, secret sex societies, bestiality, India-rubber dildos, slave rape, duels, mock crucifixions, Turkish harems, and prophylactic devices. The Pearl often contained extensive political commentary, including references to the Reform Bills and Contagious Diseases Acts.
Back when people preferred to intersperse their wanking with deep discussions on the property requirement for voting.

It is what they used to use together with morphine (Twilight Sleep) to knock out women giving birth so they'd sleep through the entire process.
But you'd have to be given a pretty high dose to get to that point.

Atropine and jimsonweed poison (scopolamine) are bronchodialators and will reduce the production of phlegm.
They will certainly cure asthma, but they'd also cure you from life too.

Reply to TIL dunce caps were originally a sign of high intelligence and wisdom. Philosopher and theologian John Duns Scotus was a proponent of pointy hats as a way to funnel knowledge to the mind and his followers, called Dunsmen, wore them. The earliest origin of this idea traces back to this 2000 Straight Dope article, which cites no sources.
https://www.straightdope.com/21342933/what-s-the-origin-of-the-dunce-cap
In fact, the pointy hat has a long history of being used as a symbol of shame, for example the Capirote, which was a mark of humiliation worn by heretics undergoing the auto-da-fe.
